By Josephine Pennington

What started out as a popular mecha series in Japan spread like wildfire across different countries. Code Geass, which started airing on October of 2006 and ended September of 2008 has been continually a subject of talks and debates among anime fans. Not only has it managed to capture different faces of human emotions. It has also left various lessons which are applicable in todays situation.

Code Geass is written by Ichiro Okouchi and directed by Goro Taniguchi. In this Code Geass anime review, we will tackle some of the things that made the anime a popular hit among teens and adults alike. If you have watched then entire series, you are welcome to drop in your comments as well.

Theme. Without a good theme, any series will soon be boring and confusing. This anime made sure not to fail on this aspect by providing a strong one which is revenge. It is centered on a young prince who was originally a Britannian but was forced to flee the country after an assassination to their lives that killed their mother. In order to protect his sister and to avenge their mothers death he vowed on making those responsible people pay. And for a teen shouldering this responsibility, it is difficult not to sympathize with him.

Characterization. No matter how good the plot, without great and relatable characters, you still cannot get attached to the story. But Code Geass created awesome characters that are easy to like. Each of them, especially the main ones are reflective of a particular group of people. It should not be a surprise then to love the antagonists as the story unfolds.

Nice touch of friendship. In a world shrouded in bloodshed, having a fresh face to it by employing the power of friendship is such a brilliant touch employed in this series. It gives off a feeling that despite all the bad things society is experiencing, there will always be people who is there for you.

Battle against family members. Whereas mainstream conflict involves people fighting against villains who are originally strangers to the main character, this animes villains are the family of our protagonist. So it is no longer just our typical good versus bad scenario.

Weapons. If the Gundam series called them mobile suits, this anime termed them as Knightmare frames. It is not as big as the gundam units but are equally capable of inflicting huge damage. Their ability to get into close combat is also great.

Engaging plot. The main reason why this has garnered solid fandom and viewership is because of its great story which is engaging, intriguing and relatable. Characters were introduced for a reason and revelations were presented at the right moment to capture, increase or destroy the prevailing emotion on the story.

If you have not yet watched the series and is currently wrapping up your 2014 anime list, this should definitely be among your top picks. It is a cocktail of emotions with awesome revelations. A must watch.
