The Story, Sound And Albums Of Dr. Draw

By Corinne Hyde

Dr. Draw is a band that received its name from its main member, an electric violin player named Eugene Draw. He had his beginnings as a busker, and his 'doctor' nickname comes from his ability to raise the spirits of the saddest passers by when he was busking. Since then, his career has been founded on this positive energy, which he channels into original compositions that cannot conform to any specific genre.

Draw's albums have hit the best seller lists. He has formed a band with several classically trained musicians who all focus on electronic instruments. In 2008, they included the electric harp, guitar, violin and cello. Although these instruments are generally used in classical genres, the band manages to achieve a strong, contemporary style that has classical roots.

The music is bringing a classical element to modern tastes by introducing edgy rhythms to their technically adept playing. They have shared the stage with Seal and opened for Bette Midler. They are currently concentrating on taking their albums to an eastern audience by playing at Asian events.

The band's goal is to introduce a unification of cultures through creative experience. This is a facet that has played a major role in their style's constant evolution. They often combine disparate instruments and styles, and this takes their music beyond limited classifications.

Classical violin is combined with elements of pop, jazz and rock, which creates a seemingly disparate style. Electronica is also an important part of their style, with facets of funk and world music occasionally used in their unique sound. Their jazzy roots run deep, so they have been accepted as part of the jazz community. They have performed often at events distinctly separated into this particular genre.

The local charts have been kind to the band, and their discs have achieved high sales. Their first disc received its name from the rail route that Eugene used to use. The latest disc the band has produced was created to help the audience to find serenity among the chaos of the modern world. They are renowned for breaking the boundaries of genre.

Despite the electronic instruments the band plays, the sound they generate remains organic. They have ventured into house styles that always contain an element of classical music. Eugene's family is originally from Russia, and his mother had a musical career as a dancer. Eugene was obsessed with the violin as a child, and continued to learn additional instruments as he grew up. Violin remains his favorite.

One of the first musicians to combine classical music with pop was Vanessa Mae, but she typically pasted traditional compositions onto generic pop beats. In comparison, Eugene's style has moved far beyond that kind of simplicity. The band has achieved a fine balance of rhythm, atmosphere and strings, which is most evident in its most recent disc, Adagio.

Adagio concentrates on creating addictive hooks for the melodies, and every song on the album builds to a grand climax. Some reviewers find this slightly grandiose, whilst others call it epic. Dr. Draw continues to perform regularly at festivals and clubs, and 2012 won them relative popularity in the East.
