Tips In Pricing Commissioned Custom Oil Portraits

By Joanna Walsh

Many painters make a living out of commissioning a painting. They do paintings whenever they are requested by a client. With their skills and knowledge about this trade, they try their best to meet the demands and expectations for their clients, especially when they are commissioned to do custom oil portraits in NYC.

The clients are usually requesting for the work of an artist for various reasons. They might commission it for the sake of having a family photo. They can also use this as a gift to someone they treasure a lot. It may also be to decorate their home. No matter the reason, it is the artist's job to meet the request.

When you are doing the said painting, the main concern you will surely have is how you will price the painting. You have some considerations that you will have to take note of when you want to know what the proper price should be for your work. If you take these considerations into mind, you can come up with a price that everyone will find reasonable.

With regards to the price of the said commissioned work, it would be better to have some tips to take note of. These are the tips that can help you decide what reasonable price would be the most suitable for the said commissioned work. When it comes to that, here are the ground rules that one must take note of for this then.

First, know that no price is in stone. Understand that the price will change according to the demands of the clients. More than that, it will also change according to how well you can do it. If you are already established in your trade, you can even command a higher price for the said work.

Do not undercharge. When you are considering what price should be put on your artwork, you have to be certain that all of the expenses you spent money on for the creation of that artwork would be covered in that price. These expenses include the shipping, framing, paints, canvas, and similar other things.

You should be clear and consistent, especially with the pricing scheme that you are using. It is a bad idea to use a by-hour pricing scheme because the clients do not really care about the time you spent on making the said work. They end up getting confused with the pricing scheme. It would be a better idea to use a size-based scheme instead.

Researching the trade should be a given. This is your homework so you have to do it right. When it comes to researching the trade, you have to check what the other painters in your locality have to offer. You will have to do proper research so that you can apply the good things properly to your own work.

If you are talking with your clients about the price, you should be firm on the price you stated. Once you give the price, you should then shut up. Do not attempt to rationalize why your price is like that. Most importantly, you should not apologize about it. You have to let your clients decide on taking the work or not after that.
