Some Piano Instruction For Starters

By Sonya Riley

Music is just the greatest thing. It makes people around the world dance and sing, to get together and have a wonderful time. Some it helps to concentrate and create new things, to some it's the source of workout-motivation. One thing is clear: music belongs to every culture on earth. Everyone sings, dances and plays their instruments. If you too want to be transformed from basic listener into music-maker, follow these piano instruction for starters!

It will always be a good idea to take some lessons, especially if you plan on becoming a true master. There are both private and public music schools in many areas. These schools usually require some experience and/or passing a test of some kind. It may sound terrifying to stand before a group of people doing what is most likely your first public performance, but don't freak out. Just practice and sing a song you like or a little piece with an instrument you have played before. They won't be too hard on you.

Other option is to find a private teacher somewhere. Try searching online or through local papers. As an learning option private teacher is at least as good than those in bigger schools. You are not tied to any curriculum, so if the teacher is cool, the content of the lesson is pretty much up to you. However, if you don't want a teacher at all for some reason, it is still possible to learn quite a lot via internet. There is just some basic information you ought to know.

The whole western notation system is based on octaves that go on and on. The same note appears at the beginning and the end of each octave, for example C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C, also known as C-major. In everyday talking you hear terms like 'higher C' and 'lower C', but when you get far enough, you will learn that every note has it's own name. C4 is a lot easier to find than just a 'very high C'.

You will find the basic C-major quite in the middle of your instrument. Although it takes place at white keys, the easiest way to find it is to look at the black ones. You see them making groups of two and three. C is the white key right on the left side of the left-sided-key at any group of two black keys. If you play all the white keys up to the next C, you have just played the C-major.

Now it's the time to play your first song. It may be a good idea to write letters C, D, E, F and G on little pieces of paper and carefully tape them on the correct keys of your instrument. Then set your right hand on those keys and play: E D C D E E E D D D E G G (a little break) E D C D E E E D D E D C.

In case that seems too hard, here is an other option for playing the same thing: middle finger, fore finger, thumb, fore finger, middle finger x3, fore finger x3, middle finger, little finger x2 REST middle finger, fore finger, thumb, fore finger, middle finger x3, fore finger x2, middle finger, fore finger, thumb.

If everything went well, you just played 'Mary had a little lamb'. Hopefully these piano instruction made you excited to learn more and take up this wonderful hobby. Search the web for video-tutorials, how to read music sheets and more!
