By Katy Kline

One of the biggest challenge facing new artists is bringing out creativity in their art. New water color artists usually find it very difficult to draw inspiration from their souls as they set out. At this time, they are usually preoccupied with painting techniques, and this lowers their creativity. As much as knowing the techniques is important, drawing should be subject to creative imagination.

During painting, it is very important to take a good look at the subject. You have to make your drawing subject part of you. Spending considerable amount of time inspiring area aids a lot when it comes to landscape painting. It helps to make painting your vision easier.

Visiting the area you want to paint is encouraged. Do not leave behind your pencil, drawing papers and eraser. One great way of internalizing the scene is to start out by making sketches of the area. In doing so, you get to create a mental picture of that place. Because of this, it subsequently becomes easy to do the painting using the image already in your mind.

Carrying a camera with you may come in handy. The photographs taken will then be used as the template of what you want to paint. The photos should be of different angles and distances to give you a holistic overview. When you head back to the studio, you will have the sketches and photographs to work with.

On spot watercolor painting can be challenging, more so to beginners. Sometimes you feel like the scene is always changing. Sometimes the paper has to be put in particular angles, or having to constantly measure level of water paint paper saturation. The solution to this is to try as much as possible to paint less complex locations. Later on as your get better, you can gradually move on to more detailed painting.

When painting on site, you do not have to ferry your whole studio to the location. This is something most beginners are not aware of. They end up carrying many types of equipment which they do not need. The extra tools end up becoming a nuisance.

You must be aware that outdoors are quite unpredictable. There can be an instant switch from sunny to rainy weather. Thus you have to develop speed and accuracy in painting. You first do the huge blocks prior to filling in the finer details. Majority of painters start with the sky as the first big block. It is normally paler than other areas. This allows you to paint lighter areas first as you move to darker areas. Painting of the sky also dictates how other parts are to be painted.

The objects in the foreground require fine detail. However, avoid the temptation to paint all minute details. It will take you a lot of time, and also draw away attention from the areas you wish to highlight. With all these considerations taken in, one thing you should not forget to use is creativity and imagination. Water color artists will always find these tips beneficial when doing landscape painting.
