Sniper Packs Meet Sniper Needs

By Alison Wilcox

Snipers needed something in which to carry their gear. That is the reason the sniper packs came into being. This is actually nothing more than an upscale high-tech backpack for a highly-trained shooter. Snipers, working alone or partly as a group, keep close eye-contact on their target high above or far away. They often have two or three-day surveillance. Their pack contains what they need to do their jobs. In their pack or strapped to it is a high-powered, precise rifles and special lenses. If they are part of a group, they need sophisticated communication equipment as well.

The packs are also referred to as Tactical Assault Gear Packs. Military equipment companies manufacture them especially for these marksmen. These tactical assault gears are used to carry their gear including a rifle, rifle stand, hydration bladders and even overnight gear. These tactical assault gears must be lightweight, durable and waterproof. In order to secure ammunition and highly-classified information, the pack contains several convenient pouches. The exterior is covered with specific webbing material which allows the marksman to secure such important items as his rifle and classified documents. A zippered gusset at the top provides easy access to the water sources while allowing the main compartment to remain closed.

These tactical assault gear often include antenna ports, custom pockets, and tie down straps for carrying a rifle or sleeping mat. Side straps will compress a loaded pack. The pack also includes space to accommodate ammunition that will be easily accessible to the user. There is also usually a rifle stand.

Right side and bottom of pack covered with PALS webbing. The most economical of these tactical assault gears are made of durable nylon-like material. Thus, they are lightweight but tough enough to carry heavy equipment in the least friendly weather. Sturdy cloth ties secure the sniper's weapon and other supplies. More expensive ones are constructed of cordura. Instead of material ties, they use steel rings. Fastex clips can be quickly replaced anywhere. The canvas lining to allows air circulation, to keep the pack cool and the user from chafing. Economical ones start as low as a hundred or two. The best ones may cost upwards of a thousand dollars. These tactical assault gears are usually made of material which blends into the surroundings. Drab khaki or camouflage is popular.

These tactical assault gears can be purchased at a variety of military equipment stores, bricks-and-mortar locations and online at many military equipment web sites. Most contain hydration pouches and individual pockets for ammunition and important papers. There are ties, straps or other devices like metal rings for attaching gear liked a bedroll, an assault rifle and a rifle stand.

Technology has done a great deal to improve many things. These tactical assault gears are no exception. Newer ones combine a backpack and drag bag. The sniper can then move the heavy weapon in the pack by dragging it when terrain allows such. A top-cover can serve to conceal the sniper's rifle.

Newer ones also contain a cover for the sniper's rifle. This keeps it hidden from prying eyes. When left uncovered, the weapon can withdrawn rapidly. If the Control Clips are left unfastened, the user can pull his weapon rapidly from under its cover.

In one fluid motion, sniper packs can go from drag bag to backpack. The user simply changes over the waist belt for a harness. As a drag bag, the device lightens the sniper's load allowing speed of movement. When the terrain is treacherous the sniper pack immediately converts to a portable shoulder pack device.
