Paper Train Models Come In All Sizes

By Traci Witt

For those who like to collect model trains and other various replicas there are other ways to get them if the traditional methods are a bit too expensive. Paper train models are easy to obtain and make and they do not take much to get started. All you need is a computer and a printer and some thick paper like card stock and you have all that you need.

For the people who are traditional model train collectors they often do not see what it is about the paper models that people are attracted to. But for those who love building the paper versions they would not trade them for the world. There are a large variety of styles out there and it does not stop with trains either.

There is even a growing software industry that has come from this also. More than a few programs exist to help people make these construction projects into anything they see. People are making buildings, weapon replicas, airplanes and boats. Some people have even taken to making characters from video games and cartoons.

But it does not stop there. There are some out there who are starting to use the sheets or card stock, which is really thick, to make full costumes. They are constructing full suits of armor and the swords and guns to go with it. There are even people who have made working transforming suits. The people who make these will sometimes take them to the conventions and win prizes for the replication of the costumes they have made.

It is not just the transportation industry that comes in these versions but everything else as well. If you are making a set from a military scene you can get the soldiers, the buildings, the vehicles, and the trains. Everything that you need can be easily downloaded and printed. That is the allure of these model sets, because you can download, print, and build almost right away.

They say that it can take months to find a specific train sometimes and then the same time to properly build it. Many times they have to build and rebuild it many times before getting it just right. Then it has to be painted, which is another daunting task for some. After painting it they might even have to start over if they notice something just is not right.

The entire process does take time and it takes a lot of patience, just like building a traditional model. They might not move like a real one and they may not light up and blow smoke, but from a distance they often look like the real thing. That is, providing it was done right. You can get the entire line and have a historical model right there in front of you.

Those involved with paper train models do not agree of course. They love the fact that they have to almost hunt down certain ones and then build them. They might not move like the real ones but they do not care. They are happy to be able to look at them and use their imagination. Just having them to look at everyday is often enough for them. It is all they need.
