Fiber Art And Its Numerous Techniques

By Esther Salazar

Fiber art is one type of craft which uses different textiles in making artistic pieces. Textiles that are often used in this craft may include fabric, silk, wool, cotton, yarn, and some synthetic fibers. The primary focus of this craft is the manual labor involved and the materials used in creating a piece. These works can be found in many places nowadays.

There are several sources where fiber can be taken from. This may come from certain plants and animals. Examples include cotton which comes from cotton seed pods. Silk is derived from cocoons of silkworms. Wool comes from sheep hair. With technology at present, synthetic materials are produced like plastic acrylic. These materials can be used for many different applications.

These materials are processed in certain ways to make them into clothing or cloth. Aside from cloth, these are used to make a wide variety of objects and craft products. These can make numerous pieces that are creative and usable for certain purposes. A lot of them serve decorative purposes and displayed in art shows. There are different techniques to make these objects.

Quilting is a known technique commonly used for this craft. This refers to the process of sewing a number of layers of material to produce a padded or thicker material known as a quilt. A sewing machine may be used to do this process but this can also be done manually. This process also involves designing to make patterns thus making the material more decorative.

Knitting is also a very popular technique which can be done in many different styles. This method is uses yarn or thread to make cloth. Similar to quilting, this can be accomplished by hand or by machine. With this method, one can create clothing using different needles and yarns. The final piece can be of different colors, textures, and patterns.

Rug hooking is also a known technique that involves loops of yarn pulled to make rugs. This technique often uses wool strips to produce rugs and even wall hangings. Various designs can be made ranging from flowers to animals and simple geometric patterns. Designs are produced commercially these days to be used as decors in homes.

Braiding is another technique which is done by intertwining three strands of material together. As a result, the braided material looks long and narrow. Most often, a braid would look flat but more complex types made with more than three strands would look different in terms of pattern and structure. Braids are used for hairstyling, rope making, and other kinds of artwork.

Felting is the process of pressing, condensing, and matting woolen materials to produce felt. This type of cloth is non woven and may come in different types. Some felts are soft while some are tough enough to be used as construction material. These also come in different colors and sizes and can be formed into various shapes.

A lot of artists are famous for their fiber art today. Each of them has made masterpieces using different materials and certain techniques. They have produced many famous works for people to enjoy. Many people are also into this craft and avidly collect pieces. Some people use the items in their homes and some simply use the pieces as decors in their homes.
