Basic Information Regarding Aerial Silk

Aerial silk refers to a type of performance art. It might also be referred to as aerial contortion or acrobatics. During these performances, one or many artists will engage in aerobatic acrobatics. All of the positions that are done are carried out while hanging from a special fabric known as the silk.

Performers will climb on the fabric, which is usually suspended high up. Most do not use any type of safety lines or equipment. For this reasons, training and skill is essential to remaining safe during these acts. Fabric is used to wrap, spiral, suspend, fall and swing bodies into an assortment of positions. On the silk, performers will strike different figures and poses while they are in the air. Some utilize spray or dried rosin on the hands and feet to aid in gripping and as a way to increase the amount of friction.

Fabrics used for this purpose are flexible and provide some give but are very strong. Width of such silks will vary and is usually based on the routine and the artist. Usually these have enough length to permit rigging, which involves hanging of silks and hammocks. The material employed is made from polyester lycra, which often has some stretch. The amount of stretch may range from low, which is mostly for beginners, and medium, which is mostly used by experienced artists.

Tricks are a big part of aerial acrobatic performances. The three different categories used for tricks commonly performed: climbs, drops and wraps. Climbs are known to range from efficient and practical to more athletic or elegant. French climb and straddle climb are just a few examples of these.

Wraps refers to static poses that are done when an aerialist wraps silk around various parts of the body. Usually the more complex the wrap, the stronger the amount of friction there is and the less power that is required to hold oneself up. When it comes to drops, the performers wrap up high in the silks and then fall down into lower positions. This kind of trick requires the most skill, strength and control. It is also one of the most risky.

Performers are generally very flexible and strong people. It takes practice to master this form of art and become truly skilled. Power, strength, courage and flexibility are necessary traits of these kinds of performers.

Most of the people who do these acts work for entertainment groups, such as circuses. Some may be associated with companies hired to entertain at special events, large parties, festivals, weddings or carnivals. The cost of booking these acts will range and is mostly dependent on performance, event, company or the acrobat.

Aerial silk is type of performance that is becoming more common in the modern world. It involves using special fabrics that are known as silks to do an assortment of drops, climbs and wraps while suspended in the air. Typically there is no safety equipment that is used by these performers so it is very important that they are on top of their skill. Those who do these acts are strong and flexible. Many find work as entertainment acts at various events.
