The Cross Movie Can Now Be Purchased On DVD

By Allyson Burke

The Cross Movie is a film that was made in 2008 and released the next year. It was Matthew Crouch's debut as a documentary director. It follows the 38,000 miles Arthur Blessitt covered on foot. His efforts landed him in the Guinness Book of World Records. The goal of his journey was to take the gospel to every country and primary island group in the world.

Matthew Crouch had met Arthur Blessitt 20 years before. The two men met again by chance in the summer of 2008, during Blessitt's trip to Zanzibar, Africa. It was then that Crouch had the idea to create a documentary that would tell the complete story, including the timeline of each facet of the journey.

Blessitt's tale essentially begins with what he calls simple obedience to God: He felt as if God was leading him to fashion a huge cross which he then placed on the wall of his Hollywood, California Christian coffee house called "His Place". This was done in the mid-nineteen sixties, and by nineteen sixty-eight he had begun taking short walks to Hollywood's Sunset Strip in order to feed homeless individuals and share the gospel.

Blessitt quickly began feeling as if God was telling him to take a similar walk, only this time throughout the entire country. He left Hollywood shortly after, and started a journey that would lead as far as New York City and Washington DC. It began in 1969 on Christmas Day.

The following year, Arthur carried his cross through then war-torn Northern Ireland. This was the trip that began what was soon to become a walk throughout the entire world. In 1988, he felt led by God to continue his journey until he had reached every country possible with the gospel. A decade later, he completed this mission, even gaining access to North Korea through a chain of extraordinary circumstances.

The aforementioned documentary was finished in the summer of 2008. The wife of Arthur Blessitt offered valuable insight to director Matthew Crouch, as she accompanied her spouse to almost 300 of the countries he walked through during his journey. Currently, Blessitt's project is immortalized in the Guinness Book of World Records as "The lengthiest walk on Earth".

A personal glimpse of Blessitt's trip through three hundred and fifteen countries, island groups, and territories is chronicled in the documentary. The specific distance he covered was 38,102 miles, which is equivalent to walking the circumference of the earth at the equator level one and a half times. The film has been received well by both non-Christians and those who embrace the Christian faith, as it truly highlights the beliefs and dedication of Blessitt and his family.

The movie also highlights many conversations Blessitt had with the individuals with whom he stopped to speak during his journey. Many times he walked in complete solitude, while other times large groups of people were waiting to greet him in certain areas. The journey led him into many troubled and war torn areas of the world. However, no circumstances he was forced to meet ever tempted him to abandon his journey. The Cross Movie played in select theaters, and is now available on DVD from a variety of retail outlets, as well as online.
