What To Look For When You Visit Poetry Contest Sites

By Shirley Hughes

The ability to write good poems is usually considered as inborn. However, people also go through a lot of learning and reading to develop this skill and to be the best at it. That said, poetry writing demands both imagination and articulation to make sense to the reader. People who know how to write poems that captivate have a flair for visiting poetry contest sites just in case they may find an opportunity.

It is good to visit the website so that one can know the details of the competition. One of the things you should look out for assuming you are interested in one is the prizes available. This is something that can spur you into action and even if you are not too good at writing poems, you could learn so quickly if the prizes attract you.

Depending on the country where you come from, getting a visa to travel to America, Europe or Australia may be difficult, even for a holiday. This is easier when you are being sponsored especially by a group of persons organizing poetry contests. Thus, if meeting some poetry tutors is what you think can make you do exceedingly well in this aspect, waste no more time in going for them.

Another prize that is common for participants is scholarship opportunities. Winners are often granted the chance to study literature in some of the best universities in the world. The idea is that such contestants will be able to do better when given the chance. The scholarship given may be partial or full depending on the body organizing the contest as well as the performance of the contestant.

Funds are also given out. This is often the most common kind of reward for poetry writing. Candidates are usually rewarded handsomely and this spurs them to put in their best for the competition. Usually, the rewards are given according to one's performance. Regional winners gain much, but not as much as the one who emerges as the overall winner.

It is also important to know what the organizers have set for the age limit. Some contests are for those who are children, some for teens and some for those under the age of twenty-five. If you are advanced in age, you may have to spend more time looking for those with no age limit.

You would also need to know if there is an entry fee. Therefore, it is important to also ask questions peradventure you were not able to find it on the website when you visited. This is however not the case in many of them but you just cannot overrule the fact that an entry fee is possible. Knowing about this on time will help you decide if you would participate or not.

Every poetry competition has a closing date. This is the date when no more submissions will be accepted. Knowing this date will help you plan yourself well so that you can write and edit before the closure. You may also want to see a friend who may be better than you to help you edit it.
