All The Great Things You Never Knew About Barbicide Jars

By Grace Rivera

Anyone who grew up going to the barber shop or beauty salon probably noticed those blue barbicide jars. They performed essential disinfecting duties, keeping hair and manicure tools sanitary. Each iconic jar has been hard at work, keeping businesses clean for generations.

A smaller jar will hold about four ounces of disinfectant. This size is perfect for use at a manicure station. Estheticians appreciate the ability to easily place various tools in the jars. When kept close by, work flow is uninterrupted and everything is kept tidy.

The mid-size jar will keep twenty one ounces of fluid and hold multiple manicure implements and tools at one time. This is a perfect size for counter tops and larger customer volumes. The larger amount of disinfectant will completely cover everything so that all surfaces are exposed for sanitation. The tall jar will hold about thirty-seven ounces of liquid and allows for complete immersion of combs, brushes, scissors and long tools.

Though these are staples in barber shops, it is just as common to find them in hospitals and health care facilities. Their sturdy glass and stainless steel construction makes them durable additions to these workplaces. Each also has a rubber base that helps to prevent slips and tips. They stand strong and straight, and their unique inner basket is designed to be rust free. There is no need to touch the solution inside, as the basket handles allow for easy removal of tools once they are sanitized.

The Barbicide blue liquid product was created in 1947 by Maurice King. His brother, James, was responsible for marketing and selling it. It is nationally recognized for sanitation use in not only barber shops and hair salons, but in hospitals and health care settings as well. The distinctive jar design was also created by King Research, and has been on shelves for years. One is displayed in the National Museum of American History at the Smithsonian. It takes about 10 minutes to completely sanitize items. But, customers often request that tools used for their care come from the jar. They recognize the iconic glass container as a sign of a clean business.

The popularity of this common barbering item has given it longevity on many bidding sites online. Antique or vintage years command higher prices. There are many selections available, as the use was practically universal due to laws requiring it throughout the United States. These are containers for the legendary liquid that served, and continues to, as fungicide, virucide, and germicide for millions. These are highly collectible, whether put on display, pressed into use once more, or re-purposed for new use.

There are many ways to display the antiques. Some put them in curio cabinets or place them on display shelves. Others enjoy using them as innovative storage for sewing or art supplies. When they are rust and damage free, they can be used for their original intention. The ideas for re-purposing them are quite clever.

Legendary barbicide jars have had a distinctive history and continue to sanitize in the work world. Always current and steadily fashionable, these iconic glass pieces are simple and interesting. It is quite fascinating to see how a practical combination of product and storage have come to symbolize cleanliness and worth for so many generations.
