Some aspects of the education system in this country are ranked among the top three in the world. Primary and secondary school education is free for the most part and there is an expectation that students attend school. The systems of education philosophy and the methods used in primary and second school is markedly different from those used at the university level.

A basic example of this is the regard that Koreans have for newborns with respect to the age when they're born. A Korean child is considered to have completed the first year of their life while in the womb and therefore start their life at a year old.
