The Beginning Of Subwoofers

By Fj Philben

Todays sub-woofers had there humble inceptions in the garage area of a few entrepreneurial guys by the name of Arnold Nudell and Cary Christie, in the closing years of the 1960's. Mr Nudell was scientist and Mr Christie an aviator . They formed a Company named New Technology Enterprises, which was reorganized and reorganized as Infinity. The proto-type sub-woofer cabinet was an 18 inch Cerwin Vega containing the addition of another winding to send the signal to the encased amp . This first system cost just under $1800 about 1967 and about that time was some 40 % higher in cost its closest competition , which during that time was a loud-speaker system. This very first enclosed bass sub-woofer device was called the Servo Statik 1.

Around the same time a local retailert owner in Los Angeles was receiving complaints from consumers concerning the inability of the electrostatic speaker system , the best of their kind in that year , to handle the lower ranged bass heertz . Mr. J. Miller approached his business partner Ken Kreisel with the trouble and Mr. Kriesel designed a powered subwoofer that could handle the lower hertz range , the bass sub-woofer.

Subwoofers became widely recognized by the general public with their use in the movie "Earthquake." The Sensurround system was purchased and set up in several film theaters throughout the US . This system comprised of several FIVE HUNDRED watt amplifiers that were controlled by soundtrack control tones. By the conclusion of the 1970's, as an outcome of this box office hit film , there were several hundred movie houses that were to set up the Sensurround system to provide a brand-new listening and viewing offering for their customers .

Unfortunately for many homeowners it was not realizeable until the bringing to market had the ability to utilize the spool to reel devices for tape-recording the lower tones , mass creastion it was the development of the smaller cassette/CD.

As a result of the continued development and miniaturization of components and technology , sub-woofers are consistently included in today'shome theatre systems and are fairly economical compared with the first days of New Technology Enterprises back in the late 60's.
