Iconic And Famous Photographers In NYC

New York City is one of the most important and historic locations in the world for fine art photography. The famous photographers in NYC have pushed the medium onto new directions and created some of the world's most iconic images. These photographers include, Diane Arbus, William, Klein, Steven Klein, Garry Winogrand, Nan Goldin and Joel Meyerowitz.

Diane Arbus was born in New York City in 1923 and tragically committed suicide in 1971. She is possibly the most important female photographer of her generation. Arbus was primarily involved in photographing societies outsiders, using black and white film and the square format of the Hasselblad camera. She focused on people who were marginalised such as dwarves, giants, transgender people, nudists and circus performers. She used to refer to her subjects as "aristocrats", who had already passed their test in life.

Nan Goldin is one the most famous female photographers in the world. She is known for her hard-hitting grunge style. She began photographing the emerging punk scene in New york during the 1970s before documenting the lives of the gay communities of the Bowery area of New York. She was personally involves with her subjects and her snap-shot aesthetic created some dark and disturbing images. Her most famous work titled "The Ballad of Sexual Dependency" has been highly influential in photography, film-making, music and many other mediums.

Garry winogrand is possibly the most iconic street photographer of New York City. He prowled the streets with his Leica capturing moments in black and white that reflected the social issues of 1960s New York. He took thousand of photographs, many of which became very famous. His style can be very disturbing, uncompromising and challenging; showing the real face of New York.

Garry Winogrand is the archetypal New York street photographer and his dark and uncompromising images are known throughout he world. He roamed the streets of New York with his Leica camera and 35mm monochrome film capturing the social issues of 1960s New York. He has taken thousands of photographs during his career.

Nan Goldin moved to New York City in the 1970s and began photographing the punk scene that was emerging in the city, along with underground gay communities. She also documented the hard drug subculture of the Bowery area that became The Ballad of Sexual Dependency", which is her most famous work. Goldin's photographs are a real walk on the wild side in the city of New York and her snapshot aesthetic gave her photographs an edgy feel as she was personally involved with her subjects.

Joel Meyerowitz is a New York based street photographer who was an early pioneer of color film. He began shooting his iconic treat photography with his Leica and color film in the 1960s when color film was not considered an artistic medium for photography. He was the first photographer to have a color exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. He also works with 8x10 large format film, and was the only photographer to be able to document the aftermath of 9/11.

The City is the perfect city for enjoying photographic exhibitions from famous photographers in NYC, especially at the Museum of Modern Art that has a section dedicated to photography as fine art. All the above photographers were very important for pushing the medium into the area of fine art with their iconic photography.
