Artworks By An Acrylic Paint Artist

By Karina Frost

Acrylics have not been around that long but have become very popular over the past century due to their versatility and flexibility. Their quick drying time is another benefit, reducing the amount time required to finish a painting, particularly when painting many layers. An acrylic paint artist can use an amazing variety of methods and techniques, allowing for great creativity and fresh approaches to their art.

Acrylics were originally used as house paints but it was not long before the art world began to take notice of their amazing qualities. As interest grew, so manufacturers focused on improving the quality of their products. Today there are many excellent products on the market, offering much greater quality than in the past. More tonality and richness is possible and the colors are vibrant and intense.

Artists have always experimented with painting on different surfaces and artists using acrylics are no different. There are those who use them to paint on glass, wood, stone and just about any other surface without a shine. However, stretched canvas and paper are still most commonly used.

Acrylic artists produce works covering a vast range of styles. Some have a more traditional approach and favor realism whilst others take a more impressionistic, abstract approach. Landscapes, portraits and every other type of subject matter is covered. These paints can be watered down and used as thin glazes, like water colors. They can also be applied thickly, even straight from the tube.

One of the major advantages that artists appreciate is the fact that they dry so quickly. This means that they do not have to wait long after applying a first layer before going on to the next and a painting can be produced at a much faster rate. Today various retarders are available that can be used to slow down the time of drying if this is required for certain techniques like blending.

Many different methods, techniques and tools are used by these artists. They use a great variety of brushes, from a stiff brush for dabbing on paint for more texture to a thin, pointed one to create fine detail and definition. They also use knives, sponges and other tools to add more texture and depth.

There are numerous brands of acrylics being sold today. Every artist has a brand they prefer, largely dependent on style and method used. Some of these paints offer more saturated, intense colors. The drying time too varies from brand to brand. Consistency is also different with some offering more fluidity and others being like soft butter. All of these paints are long lasting and are not subject to fading, yellowing or becoming brittle as they age.

Although the medium of acrylics has gained wide acceptance today, there are still some galleries who will still only sell oils or watercolors. However, many artists have benefited from using these versatile paints. They make a living selling their paintings at galleries, particularly those found online. The availability and accessibility of these works has resulted in them reaching a far wider audience than ever before. Acrylic artists abound and although the quality of paintings being produced varies, some of them are of an extremely high standard.
